Getting into and around Moscow starts at an airport, a railway terminal or a river pier. This page lists the airports, stations and piers we cover, with a map that shows where each one sits in relation to the city. Use it to choose the right gateway for your journey, then open the guide for connections and practical notes.

Moscow has three airports we cover, railway terminals and a growing set of river piers. This page lists the ones in our guides, from Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo to the electric boat piers on the Moskva River.

Use the text below to pick the right gateway for your journey. Services and timetables change, so check the operator's official site before you travel. Allow extra time for check-in, security and traffic, especially in winter, and note that river services run on different schedules from airport and rail links.

Choose an airport

Choose Vnukovo if you want a Metro station at the airport. It is Moscow's oldest operating airport, south-west of the city, with its own Metro station, the Aeroexpress to Kievsky, buses and taxis. Night hours are quiet, with the Metro closing around 01:00 and a night bus.

Choose Domodedovo for the Aeroexpress from Paveletsky Railway Terminal or the bus link to the Metro. It lies about 40 to 45 km south-south-east of the centre, and night hours have no regular public transport.

Sheremetyevo is the busiest airport, north of the city, with two terminal complexes, the Aeroexpress train, and bus and Metro links. Winter traffic on the road can slow transfers.

Choose a river pier

The city's electric river boats are reported to run daily from about 07:00 to 23:00, year-round, while central cruise boats run in the navigation season. Kievsky River Pier is the main central departure point for cruises, beside the Kievsky Railway Terminal.

Luzhniki and Fili Park piers are on the electric route to Kievsky. Novospassky starts route 3 to ZIL, and ZIL is where routes 2 and 3 meet. Pechatniki Pier is in the middle of Pechatniki Park, a 19-minute walk from the Metro.

Northern River Station is a 1937 ship-shaped terminal on the Khimki Reservoir, and Southern River Station has an observation deck. Both run cruises in the navigation season.

Trains and the Trans-Siberian

Yaroslavsky Railway Terminal on Komsomolskaya Square is the Moscow starting point of the Trans-Siberian Railway. It has a Neo-Russian building by Fyodor Shekhtel, trains east and to the Volga, and the Komsomolskaya Metro beside it.

Allow 20 to 30 minutes to see the building and the Trans-Siberian marker, and longer if you change trains. The terminal is busiest at the morning and evening rush hours and on weekends and holidays, so go mid-morning or early afternoon on a weekday for a calm look.
