Dorogomilovo District Moscow lies west of the center, between the Moskva River and the Smolenskaya area, next to the Presnensky, Arbat and Khamovniki districts. It holds a prestigious strip of about 5 km along Kutuzovsky Prospekt, the Kiyevsky Station and Victory Park, and its name goes back to an old sloboda that was incorporated into Moscow between 1731 and 1742.
The district is known for its connection with 1812: the French crossed the river here on their march on Moscow, and the wounded of the Battle of Borodino were buried in its cemeteries. Today its landmarks are the Ukraina hotel, one of the seven Stalin skyscrapers, the Borodino Panorama museum and the Triumphal Arch. It is a district of wide avenues rather than lanes.

Why Visit Dorogomilovo?
Dorogomilovo is the place to see Kutuzovsky Prospekt, a wide avenue built between 1957 and 1963, with the Ukraina hotel from 1947 to 1952 at its eastern end, the Borodino Panorama museum, the monument to Kutuzov from 1973 and the Triumphal Arch from 1968, a replica of the original by Joseph Bove from 1829 to 1834.
It also holds the Kiyevsky Station, whose metro stations are among the busiest, and the old Borodinsky Bridge of 1912. The district is flat, free to walk, and well served by the metro, and it combines with Victory Park and the Smolenskaya area.
How Dorogomilovo Is Laid Out
Dorogomilovo stretches west from the Smolenskaya area along the Moskva River and Kutuzovsky Prospekt. The eastern end, at the Novoarbatsky Bridge, holds the Ukraina hotel, and the avenue runs west past the Borodino Panorama toward Victory Park. The Kiyevsky Station and the Kievskaya metro stations lie on the south side, near the river.
The Kutuzovskaya metro station is on the avenue, with the ground-level platforms crossed by the road. The Triumphal Arch stands on the avenue’s far side, on Victory Square, with Victory Park behind it. The district’s older cemeteries and the remains of the old sloboda are less visible.
A sensible route starts at Kievskaya, walks to the Ukraina hotel, follows the avenue past the Borodino Panorama and the Kutuzov monument and ends at the Triumphal Arch or Victory Park.
Highlights of Dorogomilovo
Kutuzovsky Prospekt
The avenue emerged between 1957 and 1963, incorporating part of the old Mozhaiskoye Shosse, and is named after Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov. The part inside Dorogomilovo is the eastern, prestigious stretch, with wide lanes and Soviet and modern buildings. It is a road to see by walking its pavements, not by crossing it.
Tip: Use the underpasses, since the avenue is wide and busy.
The Ukraina hotel
The Ukraina hotel, built from 1947 to 1952, is one of the seven Stalin skyscrapers and dominates the eastern end of the avenue. It is now officially the Radisson Royal Hotel. It is best seen from the embankment and the bridge, and its interiors are for hotel guests.
Tip: See it from the Novoarbatsky Bridge for the full silhouette.
The Borodino Panorama
The Borodino Panorama museum, at 38 Kutuzovsky Prospekt, opened in 1962 and displays a painting of 1912 of the Battle of Borodino, with a cabin-style izba visited in set sessions. A monument to Kutuzov from 1973 stands near it. Older listings give closing days of Friday and the last Thursday of the month, which were not confirmed, so check the museum's own site, 1812panorama.ru.
Tip: Check the hours and closing days on its site before you go.
The Triumphal Arch
The Triumphal Arch, from 1968, is a replica of the original of 1829 to 1834 by Joseph Bove, which was razed in 1936. It stands on the avenue with Victory Park behind it, and is best seen from the pavement with the avenue leading toward it. The area is open and free to walk.
Tip: See it from the avenue's side, with the arch framed by the road.
The Kiyevsky Station and Kievskaya
The Kiyevsky Station is a railway terminal with three Kievskaya metro stations sharing one entrance, on the Filyovskaya, Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya and Koltsevaya lines. The Filyovskaya station's bridge, built in 1937, was the first above-ground section of the metro. One entrance of the Koltsevaya station is topped by a reproduction of an old emblem. It is a transport hub, not a sight to tour.
Tip: Allow time for the transfers, since the three stations are connected by passages.
The Borodinsky Bridge
The bridge over the Moskva River, built in 1912 by the city, still stands and is a short stop on the walk. The district's links with 1812 include the French crossing of the river at Fili, Dorogomilovo and Luzhniki. The bridge is a historic structure, not a museum.
Tip: Walk across it for the view of the embankment and the Ukraina hotel.
Atmosphere
Dorogomilovo is a district of wide avenues, tall Stalin and modern buildings and the river embankment, with heavy traffic along Kutuzovsky Prospekt. The side streets are quieter, with courtyards and older apartment blocks.
By day the pavements are used by commuters moving between the Kievskaya and Kutuzovskaya stations, and travelers pass through the Kiyevsky Station. In the evening the avenue is lit and traffic is dense. The embankment is calmer. The crowd varies by day and season, and no figures were verified.
History of Dorogomilovo
Dorogomilovo was a sloboda, a settlement, that was incorporated into Moscow between 1731 and 1742, when the city’s boundary expanded to the limits of the Kamer-Kollezhsky Val. It gained the city’s largest cemeteries, an Orthodox cemetery in 1771 and a Jewish cemetery in 1788, and had Moscow’s second-largest cathedral, after the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.
In 1812 the French marched on Moscow in three columns, crossing the river at Fili, Dorogomilovo and Luzhniki. The village of Fili, where Kutuzov made his decision to leave Moscow, lies just outside the district’s present boundary. The wounded of the Battle of Borodino died and were buried in the Dorogomilovo cemeteries.
In 1912 the city built the Borodinsky Bridge, which still stands. In the early Soviet period the district received a first new hotel, the Kiyevskaya, in 1934, and a student campus that gave Studencheskaya Street and its metro station their name. The remains of the painter Isaac Levitan were moved from the Jewish cemetery to the Novodevichy Cemetery.
Post-war construction concentrated on the embankments and the beginning of Kutuzovsky Prospekt, notably the Ukraina hotel skyscraper, built between 1947 and 1952. Kutuzovsky Prospekt itself emerged between 1957 and 1963, incorporating part of the old Mozhaiskoye Shosse. In 1963, with the New Arbat redevelopment, the segment between the Garden Ring and the Novoarbatsky Bridge was given to New Arbat.
The Borodino Panorama museum opened in 1962, with a painting of 1912, and a monument to Kutuzov was added in 1973. The Triumphal Arch of 1968 is a replica of the original of 1829 to 1834 by Joseph Bove, which was razed in 1936.
Today the district is a prestigious strip of about 5 km along Kutuzovsky Prospekt, with Victory Park and the Kiyevsky Station, and lies next to the Presnensky, Arbat and Khamovniki districts.

International sanctions affect payments between Russia and many other countries.
